The North west

Here are some photos from the last few days in the north West. The beach and cliffs in Francois Peron national park. Kalbarri National  park showing the river gorge, apparently they went prospecting  for gold in this river. Natures window and the pink lake near Northampton  which really was pink!!

Today we had a historical day we looked around Northampton which had lots of old buildings and looked at a display about military personel in an RSL building . Dad should know what that means!!

We then went on to Geraldton and visited the museum, and learnt lots about ship wrecks off this coast, the aborigines and  pearl fishing.  The fields near Geraldton were stripped of trees many years ago to make way for agriculture but it is no longer possible to grow crops in  those fields  now  due to salination which the natural trees used to dissipate. Everything looks quite grey and dismal in this area quite a contrast to the red cliffs further North.  Shows how people can destroy the land by changing its original use.

 We are staying in Geraldton tonight in a motel. I would say it has been much built up and extended in the past 25 years so probably not what Dad would remember.

Tomorrow we have another long drive to the outskirts of Perth as we have to take the car back by 12.00pm on Thursday.  Currently using the wifi in the Ocean Hotel in the centre of Geraldton

Discovering the South West

Today we drove further South to the very far south west point of Australia where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Sea. On the way we passed through lots of lovely forested areas and  the Margaret River winery region and stopped at Margaret River town for a coffee. Nearby the coffee shop was a historical museum which showed how the English people lived when they first arrived in Australia. It was very hard!  I am always in awe of these people who set off into the unknown to get a better life in the late 1800s.  A guide told us that we were current[y passing through the area of Sussex and she thought it ironic we live in Sussex in England. Inside the house was an old gramophone player which played 78 records!  This particular house was dated 1929. Having left Bexhill yesterday around 815am we arrived in Perth about 24 hours later. We started the trip by using the No 1 lounge at Gatwick and then had a 6.5 hour trip to Dubai. During that flight we had a good chat with a lady who lived in Sydney. She had been helping at the koala bear hospital during the recent  fires. At Dubai we had a 2 hour changeover. It was such a busy place. Every Emirates plane seems to descend on Dubai between 12.00 and 2.00 am And the passengers disperse to other planes ( reminded me of the South Mimms changeover for coach trips!) The Perth flight was more turbulent than the flight from Gatwick but we still arrived on time after 9.5 hours We  are now enjoying a drink in the country Comfort hotel , having called them for a courtesy ride from the airport. It is 9.00pm and the temperature is a lovely 25 degrees. We have been chatting with a pleasant Scottish couple  who arrived about 2 weeks ago. But they  are off to New Zealand to...

We had another drive round this area today mainly visiting lots of the lovely beaches nearby. Our first stop was at a place called Castle Rock. It was still quite early in the morning and the weather was still wild and windy, the sea was very rough. Bob discovered some  walking  trails here so we headed off to have a look at Castle Rock. Nearby were some lookouts built especially to watch for  whales but as they don't come here until  about April or May we didn't use the facility. Each beach we visited was very different, parking was free and some had picnic tables  showers and toilets. We then  headed to the lighthouse on this peninsular.  However  we didn't stay long  because  this place was full of flies and wasps. There were also dragonflies who were obviously having a good feast!! I have discovered that using a fan is a good way to get rid of the flies so will use this method again as we are heading north tomorrow. We ate lu...
