4wheel drive experience

We booked a day out to Francois Peron National Park with Garth the owner of this apartment.
There were 5 of us in all plus another Aussie called Nigel

We set off at 8.30am. The trip involved a 60 km drive along a sandy road. After a short distance Garth had to let the air out of his tyres to provide better traction on the sand.

The views were outstanding.  Dried up salt lakes which went on for miles.  Deep red cliffs contrasting with white sandy beaches , quite amazing. Sand dunes in orange and gold contrasted against the turquoise sea and blue sea.   In the sea we saw some giant rays and small sharks. At the end Garth drove the vehicle along the beach to the swimming area.

On the way back Garth had to help some tourists with a motor home who were stuck in the sandy road. They had not deflated the tyres when told to do so. Garth let the air out for them and drove the vehicle straight out of the hole it had created.

There were flies so we had to wear the fly nets, most of the time,  but we survived.  Nigel was quite an interesting guy to talk to, having been an ex coach driver and had come here in 1950 from England as a child

When we returned to Denham Bob saw a kangaroo crossing the road at great speed, sadly I missed it!
But we have seen an incredible amount of fantastic wildlife on this trip.

We start the return to Perth tomorrow in our last week of the holiday. We have booked another night at Northampton tomorrow night, with a diversion to Kalbarrie on the way.

Still might see that elusive kangaroo!

Discovering the South West

Today we drove further South to the very far south west point of Australia where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Sea. On the way we passed through lots of lovely forested areas and  the Margaret River winery region and stopped at Margaret River town for a coffee. Nearby the coffee shop was a historical museum which showed how the English people lived when they first arrived in Australia. It was very hard!  I am always in awe of these people who set off into the unknown to get a better life in the late 1800s.  A guide told us that we were current[y passing through the area of Sussex and she thought it ironic we live in Sussex in England. Inside the house was an old gramophone player which played 78 records!  This particular house was dated 1929. We drove through some more forested  areas and our next stop was the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse on the South west point! IT WAS VERY VERY WINDY!! Again the information in the Museum  told us  about li...
Having left Bexhill yesterday around 815am we arrived in Perth about 24 hours later. We started the trip by using the No 1 lounge at Gatwick and then had a 6.5 hour trip to Dubai. During that flight we had a good chat with a lady who lived in Sydney. She had been helping at the koala bear hospital during the recent  fires. At Dubai we had a 2 hour changeover. It was such a busy place. Every Emirates plane seems to descend on Dubai between 12.00 and 2.00 am And the passengers disperse to other planes ( reminded me of the South Mimms changeover for coach trips!) The Perth flight was more turbulent than the flight from Gatwick but we still arrived on time after 9.5 hours We  are now enjoying a drink in the country Comfort hotel , having called them for a courtesy ride from the airport. It is 9.00pm and the temperature is a lovely 25 degrees. We have been chatting with a pleasant Scottish couple  who arrived about 2 weeks ago. But they  are off to New Zealand to...
We had another drive round this area today mainly visiting lots of the lovely beaches nearby. Our first stop was at a place called Castle Rock. It was still quite early in the morning and the weather was still wild and windy, the sea was very rough. Bob discovered some  walking  trails here so we headed off to have a look at Castle Rock. Nearby were some lookouts built especially to watch for  whales but as they don't come here until  about April or May we didn't use the facility. Each beach we visited was very different, parking was free and some had picnic tables  showers and toilets. We then  headed to the lighthouse on this peninsular.  However  we didn't stay long  because  this place was full of flies and wasps. There were also dragonflies who were obviously having a good feast!! I have discovered that using a fan is a good way to get rid of the flies so will use this method again as we are heading north tomorrow. We ate lu...
