Discovering the South West

Today we drove further South to the very far south west point of Australia where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Sea.

On the way we passed through lots of lovely forested areas and  the Margaret River winery region and stopped at Margaret River town for a coffee. Nearby the coffee shop was a historical museum which showed how the English people lived when they first arrived in Australia. It was very hard!  I am always in awe of these people who set off into the unknown to get a better life in the late 1800s.

A guide told us that we were current[y passing through the area of Sussex and she thought it ironic we live in Sussex in England. Inside the house was an old gramophone player which played 78 records!  This particular house was dated 1929.

We drove through some more forested  areas and our next stop was the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse on the South west point! IT WAS VERY VERY WINDY!!

Again the information in the Museum  told us  about life at the lighthouse station. They seemed to eat fish all the time because the shops were too far away, and other supplies were brought from Fremantle by boat  every three months. Whales can be seen in this area in winter but we were too early!!

Having  eaten our lunch  at Flinders Bay , named after the Captain who mapped Australia,  we headed onwards to a place called Nannup.  It was a very historical town, virtually all the buildings were heritage buildings and only about 1500 people lived there, but this weekend they were holding a  music festival in the town. We didn't know this until we arrived  so wished we had arrived earlier in the day as all kinds of things were going on
It was interesting to see that one of the bands was using the back of a lorry as a stage!! bit different to Glastonbury!!

We have enjoyed looking round this area  and we will probably explore the area a bit more tomorrow.

Margaret River!!

  1. if you went down there you could have gone to Albany and see if Doreen is still there. Albany was the whaling centre there was a factory there to e extract the oil, but had stopped before 1986 They aren't as sophisticated down there as in Perth so a lorry sounds about right for music . they had also had a forest fire before we got there it had regrown.
